Happy St Patrick’s day from Ireland ☘️ May the road rise up to meet you, may the wind be always at your back and may you be in heaven half an hour before the devil knows you’re dead ☘️
Hi there! I'm making my way through some Alan Watts content, and am discovering my vague agnosticism is well-described by his lectures. I don't know how to comfortably bring it up so I'm just going to ask: Can we talk about how it's okay to live in the gray a bit? Second question, what are your thoughts on religion and science being considered as more of a process than a strict set of laws? Thanks! Jessie, Chicago suburbs, IL
The Gospel of Tower of Power says that "Sometimes hipness is what it ain't." Do you think this concept can be taught, the path to it pointed out, or that you just have to know? You seem to apprecitate the hipness quality in people and places that others don't always (maybe even rarely) see. It's an Irish whisky for me, even though my genes related to drink are more Welsh than Irish. Cheers!
Sea shanties are making a comeback and I, for one, am happy to be here for it.
Aside from the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald (which is a fine homage not only to 29 sailors, but to/from the splendid Great Lakes as well), are there other sea shanties or 'sea songs' you believe we should all be able to sing on command?
"Haul Away Joe" is a favorite of mine. There's also "Drunken Sailor" recently featured in the 2019 movie/documentary "Fisherman's Friends."
A fine expert and source of traditional and contemporary songs of the sea is the Maine treasure known to folks as Charlie Ipcar (Charley Noble) https://www.charlieipcar.com/
And if you prefer to have a go at this question, a lyric from Gordon Lightfoot, please do:
This has nothing, yet everything to do with this post. I just finished reading Fidelity by Wendell Berry, as you had suggested. What a phenomenal book. I would have never known about it if it had not been for your books and posts. Thank you.
Hey Nick, happy belated St Patrick’s Day to you from me, my wife and Levi. We all enjoyed a boiled dinner and the company of my brother in law and his significant other on the 17th (and a pint of Guinness for those of us out of diapers).
I love the image of you and George Clooney singing Gordon Lightfoot. My mom loves to tell the story about how she would sit outside my uncle’s bedroom door when she was a kid and listen to him do a perfect rendition of “Sundown”. Makes me smile every time I hear that song.
Also, love the shirt.
And, finally, I’ve really enjoyed the John Gardner book. Thank you for the recommendation!
That was a fantastic story - glad my question could bring up such good memories. Thank you so much for sharing it!

Nice shirt!
Yes, need one?
I'm so happy that I found this, Nick. Looking forward to your stories and sage views.

I like this tale very much. Thanks for sharing!
Holy Schnikes Nick, that was a fabulous story. Not the sort of thing you hear everyday. Nicely done, and thank you kindly. Enjoy the Guinness!
Wow, Nick, your story made me cry. That was so beautiful.
Awesome! Thank you
Great post, Nick, and beautiful view! What beach is that?
I think he’s in Puerto Rico shooting a Peacock show called The Resort.
Thank you for sharing your experience and memories! Very much enjoyed this post.
