Nick, I took a deeper dive into Wendell Berry a week ago. It tickles me pink to read someone who captures the midwestern life and farmer’s plight so well. Another poet I like to return to is Robert Burns. He can be very moving and tawdry. Have fun. Good times and noodle salad
Loved the “Instructions for Life. Not a big poetry fan and certainly not knowledgeable but remember as beautiful poem written by my friend Sally Cheek about our wasted potential:
I enjoy listening to your thoughts and observations. I also enjoy the comments of others and the level of engagement that is usually achieved. I have no "buyer's remorse" when it comes to the paywall you created. Do you ever have moments of "seller's remorse", now that you are under some obligation to produce a relatively cogent moment or two for us to feast upon?
Nick, so did you sleep in the same room with the head/bust/objet d’art/cursed thing? You are a brave man.
I have a question. Maybe I missed something early on but I’m curious about the etymology of Donkey Thoughts. Is it a midwestern thing? It does make me smile.
Been listening to these since they started I guess. And sometimes admittedly I fade in and out as I'm listening and starting my day at work or whatever. While listening this morning, I cam to a dead stop when I heard Nick, recite Mary Oliver's poem (actually caused me to pause the audio go back re-listen/read and post this comment). What beautiful and powerful simple words.
Yet again I am thankful for what I hear and learn from Nick. Wendell Berry has become a staple of my reading over the last year and the size of my garden and approach to securing food has drastically changed. But few things have hit me as hard as those few words from Mary Oliver.
Not a question but a thank you: you took the time to meet the staff at The Machrie Hotel during your Islay visit. My daughter (Phoebe) was beside herself with excitement at your gift of a bottle of Offerman Edition Lagavulin...and, of course, her photo with you, and said bottle.
I’m reliably informed the bottle is on the ‘No drink!’ List until my birthday visit late September. Cheers in advance
Hi Nick, thanks for commenting on the beauty of poetry in music. I dabble a bit, and have enjoyed the poetry of Rumi lately. My kids are medium-sized and we all enjoy Jack Prelutsky, so I wrote this poem in appreciation:

What a pity
For winged creatures
To die on the ground.
Happy Sun-Day

The poetry of Jack Prelutsky
Can make you feel a little nutsky.
He has a way to bring you awaysky.
And wandering back, we're not alonesky.
When we rhyme at the endsky,
and the cadence is dancesky,
I know that you'll know what I meansky.
Life is very complexsky,
But I've got no regretskies,
when the world is explained
by the poet Prelutsky.
Love,
Jessie

Nick,
According to Wikipedia, your father is Ric, r-i-c. No “k.” You are Nick, with a K. Care to explain yourself Mr. Offerman?
