Listen now | Before we die, in which I describe the most amazing tire change I have ever seen and give Ford trucks some unsolicited love. PLUS WOOD SLABS.
Ooh, are you off to visit the Herdwick sheep? Please send them, the cows, the dogs and their people my regards from this side of the pond. Please and thank you.
I just ran into a friend who told me about the tire-changing habits of the trophy-truck team that he drives a chase truck for. When they have a flat in a 500-mile race, the truck is lifted by the built-in hydraulic jacks at each corner, and the navigator climbs out, pulls a spare off the back of the truck frame, installs it, and just tosses the flat one off the course, and get back in and blasts off. That's a $700 tire and an $800 rim, just abandoned every time there's a flat. I immediately pictured some cheerful locals following the race course the next morning, happily gathering up hardware to list on eBay, and the farther-from-the-top-of-the-food-chain race teams snapping them up at bargain prices. Seems like a wonderful ecosystem.
The mention of cows (which I adore- they're like giant puppies) prompted this question:
You clearly like animals, but just how much do you really like them? Is it just a general likeage, like "oh, there's a dog. Dogs are cool." or are you a full-on animal lover who appreciates the opportunity to snuggle and get to know a furry friend?
Also, pictures and stories of your personal dogs are always welcome. 😁
I love this story so much! We are all victims of our own stubborn on occasion. Some of us on more that just on occasion :D. That stretch of I-5 is no joke in bad weather. I'm still a little haunted by the memory of a pick up flipped, with it's cab completely flattened we saw on a trip over the pass in snow/sleet conditions. Same trip, some yahoo sped past our car flinging such a quantity of slush onto our windshield we were completely blind for several seconds and just had to ride it out, for fear of the consequences of try to break. Good times, as long as you come out the other side safe.
Nick, thank you for always inspiring us to just be a man and grab the bull by the horns. In a world where kids my age (25-34) spent most of time attached to their mobile devices, you keep us grounded to our foundation and love for nature. Listening to your stories during a morning walk through the neighborhood... LENGEN-WAITFORIT-DARY.
In regard to tire changes: During the week-long Registers Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa (RAGBRAI), the Air Force Cycling Team carries lots of spare tire tubes and sundry tools. Their “thing” is to help anyone on the ride with a broken bike, stranded by the side of the road. And the most common bike issue is, of course, a flat tire. With as much practice as they get, (after all, 20,000 riders got lots of flats), they can fix a bike flat in “nothing flat” and get you back in the saddle and peddling your bike (whether you want to or not). …Great group on a great ride!

All it takes is to be more like run, hate the government and do what's best for nature.
