The Harwood Arms - https://harwoodarms.com/. Alternatively, my husband suggests you come round here and he'll make you one of his (they are excellent), along with a glass of Glenfarclas. Which is his favoured method of Scotch Egg consumption.
- Sorry, a bit long winded - Question at the end. 🙂
Hi Nick, I have been following you for some time, I must admit your acting chops got me engaged. After reading Paddle Your Own Canoe, which inspired me to expand my interests with Building and Fabrication projects around my home (personal improving projects). Kind of funny because my main gig is a Technical Project Manager, for a large wireless telecommunication company, (Hint it starts with a T) for the last 17 years. Building backend systems (Servers, and Switching Appliances) Now, I am working on 5G towers, before that I worked for a Bank building compute systems, and before that I manage a Restaurant for 12 years.
Your book/s inspired me, and made me realize we have some early life similarities, that set me on the path I am on now. Without knowing it, my grandfather instilled in me, a strong work ethic, never stop learning, and keep moving. My grandfather owned a large citrus farm in Redlands California, which I spent all my early summers and school breaks working on the farm with my grandfather. His farm was pretty much self-sufficient, he fixed everything to maintain on-site, he had a work shop, with wood working tools, and all the equipment to support a working fruit orchard. The skills I learned in my early years are still with today.
>> Question: I know you like working with your hands, do you like working on cars? And what kind of cars have you owned and own now?
Thank you for being you, your perspective on life is greatly appreciated,
Kurt Geib - Everett WA.
PS, I am currently reading Gumption, great book. I think it should be require reading for high school students, or at least anyone running for public office. 🤔
And Happy birthday, I hope you have another great, and productive trip around the Sun.
Your posts are always enjoyable in their simple, authentic ways. The single laugh in the post sealed it. Keep being you. We need more intellectuals with the heart of a child.
God I love scotch eggs. Next time you are in Chicago I highly recommend R Public House in Rogers Park. They have a scotch egg on the brunch menu that still drives me wild.
Friendship is a precious force and we feel filled up by the goodness, humor, and inspiration of our friends. How did you, George Saunders, and Jeff Tweedy become friends? I live in Irvine, California.
Happy belated birthday, Nick! Thank you as ever for your thoughts. In light of your sign off I am compelled to re–ask an earlier question of mine. Given the state of where things are in the U.S., how do you keep optimistic for our future? My son just turned one year old, and my wife is very committed to leaving the U.S. in the near future to raise him elsewhere, but I cannot quite shake my belief in America (and therefore desire to stay). But it can be very difficult to hold on to my optimism at times.
Happy belated and kudos for your worthy "Scotch Egg" foraging. Maybe if more of our political elites would wash some dishes, fold a basket of laundry, take out the garbage or do some yard work once in a while, they too would experience an epiphany of logic that might serve them well toward supporting evolved solutions rather than the current batch that seem intent on taking us back to the mid 20th century. Thanks for the Donkey Thoughts as always.
Hi Nick - please tell me if this isn't allowed. I have something I've shared, and it's the only way I know how to put what I feel into words. Let me know if this is okay, or if I should delete the link. I don't know another avenue that feels more appropriate. I appreciate your understanding, and all the good you continue to spread in the world https://tangentialmango.substack.com/p/keep-your-faith-out-of-my-body#details
Like you, I find dishes, yard work, and repair a welcome task that sometimes becomes an excuse to interrupt my writing. Since I am also a Zen practitioner (Soto lineage), I have a different mindset when work needs to be done, or it’s my turn to get things done. I concentrate on that one thing and nothing else. My Zen practice helps me with most things. Like most people, I find a good laugh necessary and healthy throughout my day. Donkey work needs to be done. But, donkeys also laugh (and irreverently pee and crap wherever they want). Enjoy your day
Happy birthday! Welcome back to England. Your latest tweet has drummed up a plethora of great suggestions for the ultimate Scotch Egg in London. May you find the perfect Scotch Egg to go with your glass of perfect Scotch. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Wish I was in London...I'm only down the road :(
Ed from Milford, NH here. I might have posted this before but hearing you search for the ultimate scotch egg, I want to recommend a great English market in Methuen, MA (northeast MA), Thwaites Market (Thwaitesmarket.com). They make and sell scotch eggs and great pub pies of various meat and other combinations. They go great with a cold beer. They also make one of my favorites, tomato sausage. Give me some of that and some homemade potato salad and I am one happy man.

Are you going to spend time with the Belted Galloways while you are in the UK?
Thank you for your refreshing and honest look at the nature of work! When our Leisure becomes Labor, Labor becomes our Leisure...
