Jonny of Australia asks,
Dear Nick,
“How do you juggle all your exploits; acting, writing, woodworking, performing comedy, lavishing adoration on your bride, to name but a few; in such a way that you feel fulfilled and not spread too thin?
I know you strongly advocate for the benefits of a hard day’s work. I struggle to feel I can do even one thing well, and thus admire your ability to keep so many plates spinning.”
Jonny, thank you for this excellent question, and hello, Muleteers. Welcome to Thursday!
In addition to my answer above, I would say that I can only succeed at my “spinning plates” act by limiting the carnival to only a couple plates at a time. If I’m working on an intense acting job, like Devs on F/X-Hulu, for example, I’m not going to get a lot of woodworking or book writing done. When I’m touring a comedy show, however, there is a lot of travel time during which I can be writing or otherwise cranking out material of one sort or another.
Parks and Recreation was ideal for plate spinning because it kept me in Los Angeles and only required me to be on set an average of 3 days a week, which left me a substantial amount of time for the wood shop, the canoe and also some adventurous lovemaking.
Thanks for sticking with me— leave me your questions below in the comments, and please tell me where you’re from.
Love,
